Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar inaugurates India’s longest rubber dam in Gaya

Bihar job notification

India's longest rubber dam is opened in Gaya by Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.

On the Falgu River in Gaya, where thousands of pilgrims from across the nation and abroad congregate each year to pay respect to their ancestors during the Pitripaksha Mela, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar dedicated India's longest rubber dam on Thursday. He also unveiled a steel foot over the bridge for the convenience of the visitors.

This was Kumar's first engagement following his return from Delhi, where he had been on a three-day visit in preparation for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, to promote greater Opposition unity.

"The meeting in Delhi with the leaders of the opposition parties went well. The programme is starting now and will go on from here. I am not running for any position. My main goal is to unite all of the Opposition parties because that will be crucial in 2024, he said.

Kumar claimed that he suggested the name "Gayaji Dam" in light of the local religious traditions. I am relieved that the dam was finished on time and in time for the Pitripaksha Mela, which starts on Friday. Keeping Ganga water in Gaya throughout the year will be the second crucial step. He thanked Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kunar Jha and his team for completing the project and stated that "Ganga water has reached Rajgir and is expected to reach Gaya by the end of the year,” he said, thanking Water Resources Minister Sanjay Kunar Jha and his team for finishing the project, the foundation stone for which was laid on September 22, 2020.

Kumar claims that the dam will attract more pilgrims and alter the landscape. “The dam has been built at an estimated cost of ₹324 crores. The project included experts from IIT (Roorkee). “There will be enough water in the dam all year for the pilgrims’ convenience,” he said.

The rubber dam presents a picturesque site that no one had previously imagined, was a manifestation of the CM’s vision, according to Deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav.

Responding to former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s remarks that he would like to address Nitish Kumar as Prime Minister so that Tejashwi Prasad Yadav could become Chief Minister, the deputy chief minister stated, “Nitish Kumar has been serving Bihar for years and he will continue to do so.” We will offer him our assistance. There is no doubt about it. We are not interested in rhetoric. Those who came to power in 2014 promised river interconnection, converting Benaras to Kyoto, and creating jobs, but have delivered nothing. We believe in taking action. “The rubber dam speaks volumes about Nitish Kumar’s vision and commitment,” he said.

Key Points

  • Built at a cost of Rs 312 crore , the dam uses the rubber instead of concrete. It is also environmentally friendly. It is three meters high and 411 meters long. It has six spans of 60-65 meters in length.
  • Rubber sheets have been installed under the river in a length of about one thousand meters. Its diaphragm is three hundred meters. Dam is like a balloon. Its rubber tube has an automatic system for filling and removing air. Balloon air can be removed when the water is high. This will prevent and release water as per the need.
  • According to the information, the Austrian company and the Hyderabad-based agency have prepared it together. The rubber dam is made of 17 mm thick rubber. It is bulletproof. At the same time, it is being claimed that it will not deteriorate for one hundred years.
  • Built in Gaya, a famous pilgrimage site of Hindus and Buddhism, this rubber dam will keep water in the Falgu river throughout the year. This will facilitate people in bathing, pind daan and tarpan.
  • Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had laid the foundation stone on September 22, 2020. Its construction was then targeted in October 2023. But it was completed in 2022.
